By Paul Oats. Arguably the most popular, if not most prevelant, rifle currently on the military surplus market is the Russian Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle in 7. A combination of interesting history, low price, reliable design, and many variations make it an ideal rifle with which to begin a military collection. Their "wizards" calling them gunsmiths is a bit of a stretch have cobbled together these rifles and scopes, which are now being sold as collectible sniper rifles. The easiest way to tell if you have one of these cobbled rifles is by the price. Now don't get me wrong - I love MN rifles, and with a little TLC, these "sniper" models can be made to shoot quite accurately. The problem with them is that since the scope mount was not machined to match the rifle at the time of original manufacture, some misalignment problems with the scope, particularly with the windage horizontal adjustment can occur. It served quite prominently in the brutal urban battles on the Eastern Front, such as the Battle of Stalingrad, which made heroes of the Soviet snipers many of which were women. The functional and robust bolt and magazine remained essentially unchanged except for the bent bolt which allowed it to clear the scope so a round could be easily chambered. The sniper rifles were highly respected for being very rugged, reliable, accurate, and easy to maintain. Once selected the triggers were reworked and the finish on the later PU snipers were better than the standard infantry rifles. Unlike the other combatants, Soviet Russia had a well established sniper rifle manufacturing and training program in place when Germany forced its entry into World War II with the launch of Operation Barbarossa invasion in Ironically, the Soviets received the bulk of their sniping expertise from military exchanges with the fledgling Nazi regime in the s.
